Building a tool tote

This step by step diy woodworking project is about tool tote plans. There are plans to choose from when building a tool tote, so make sure you plan everything with attention and adjust the size and the shape of the tool box to suit your needs. Use quality materials to build the tool tote, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with galvanized screws.

In order to get rigid joints and a nice appearance, we recommend you to drill pocket holes using a proper jig. Align the components at both ends, making sure you don’t leave any gaps between them. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to enhance the rigidity of the tool box. Make sure the corners are right-angled and smooth the edges with a piece of sandpaper. Building the frame of the tool box

The first step of the project is to build the base of the tool tote. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size and to lock them together tightly. Drill pocket holes on both sides of the bottom component and insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the sides.

Building the faces of the tote

Next, you should build the faces of the tool tote. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut a piece of 1×6 lumber to the right dimensions and shape, as shown in the plans. Cut out a rectangle inside the faces by using a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with a piece of sandpaper and remove the residues.

Building the handle

Building the central handle is maybe the most complex step of the project, but any person with basic woodworking skills can pull it through. Follow the pattern described in the plans and build the components with great attention. Mark the cut lines on the slat before adjusting the component at the right size and drill several pilot holes at the bottom, in order to secure it into place properly. Align the component at both ends before inserting the screws and add waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
