Lumber rack plans

This step by step woodworking project is about lumber rack plans. If you want to create a vertical lumber rack with caster wheels, you should check out this project. I designed this lumber rack so that it can be moved easily and it can store many scrap pieces of wood. Follow the local building codes and hire a professional contractor if you don’t have the right skills to undertake the project on your own.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pressure-treated lumber, pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Assembling the bottom frame of the rack

Assembling the bottom frame of the rack

The first step of the project is to build the bottom frame for the lumber rack. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame. Align the edges and use a carpentry square to check if the corners are square.

Building the top frame

Building the top frame

Build the top frame from 2×4 lumber, as well. Drill pilot holes through the 12″ long slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Building the legs

Building the legs

Build the legs for the lumber rack from 2×4 lumber. Cut both ends of the legs at 75 degrees and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Assembling the lumber rack

Attach the side legs to the bottom and top frames, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the legs into the frames, as shown in the plans. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together tightly.

Fitting the horizontal supports

Fitting the horizontal supports

Continue the project by attaching the rest of the 2×4 supports to the lumber rack. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the horizontal supports. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.

Fitting the corner braces

Fitting the corner braces

In order to enhance the rigidity of the bottom frame, you need to attach braces to the four corners. Cut two pieces of 2×4 lumber (3 1/2″ long) on diagonal and attach them to the corners of the frame. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame.

Attaching the caster wheels

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for several hours. Smooth the surface with 120-200 grit sandpaper.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Make sure you choose quality components that suit your needs and tastes. If you want to protect them from decay.
